COVID-19 update (Jan 2021). Treesearch is following the recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Sweden and the local restrictions from the Treesearch partners. Due to health concerns and  travel restrictions all courses during spring 2021 will be given as on-line courses. For summer and autumn we hope to give courses in person, with the complementary possibility to attend on-line.

Biotechnology for Pulp and Paper Industry

Course content:

Overview of the technical processes in the pulp and paper industry with a focus on
bottlenecks and developing areas.
 Overview of wood degrading organisms and enzymes.
 Overview of industrial production of enzymes.
 Trangenic trees.
 Enzymatic and microbial techniques for pulp and paper industry including both
established techniques and others still on an experimental level. This include among
others biopulping, enzymatic bleaching, enzymatic activation of dissolving pulp, Pitch
control, and enzymatic deinking.
 Running a biotechnology consulting company.

Learning objectives:

The student will after the course have a fundamental
understanding of the potential of biotechnology.

Handouts, reprints from journals and material from the Ljungberg textbook of pulp and paper.

Prerequisites:

No formal pre-requisites are required, but it is strongly recommended that the students have knowledge in chemistry corresponding to some years of academic studies, and an interest for biotechnology and the forest industry.

Course fee:

The course is free of charge for PhD-students listed at Swedish universities; other PhD-students are entitled to a reduced course fee. Industrial participants are welcome to take the course as commissioned education; the course fee is then SEK 18.300:- (not incl VAT). Participation on single days is also possible. In that case, a fee of SEK 8.000:- will be charged. Please contact education@treesearch.se for single days.
