Mapping to strengthen national collaboration on PhD courses in forest-based materials
Treesearch has compiled a national overview of PhD courses related to forest-based materials – an important step toward stronger coordination, improved accessibility, and long-term competence development.

In 2025, Treesearch conducted a national mapping of PhD courses in materials from the forest and forest-industry processes. The purpose was to provide a comprehensive overview of the Swedish course offering, to generate input for identifying knowledge gaps, and to strengthen national coordination between higher education institutions.

The mapping identified 51 courses at Swedish universities and doctoral schools. The results show that, despite a good breadth in the course offering, the courses are unevenly distributed across the country and are often dependent on individual initiatives and key persons. This risks creating a lack of continuity and limiting doctoral students’ ability to plan their education.

“This mapping is an important step towards building a more long-term and coordinated course offering,”
says Josefin Illergård, author of the report and Director of Operations in Treesearch.

The results are now being used as a basis for further developing Treesearch’s national course portal at treesearch.se and for continued dialogue with universities and industry regarding future educational needs. The work is carried out within the Education Working Group, which consists of representatives from Treesearch’s university and industry partners and is led by the Director of Education, Anastasia Riazanova.

A first version of the mapping was presented at the educational conference held Autumn 2025.
