Mapping to strengthen national collaboration on PhD courses in forest-based materials
Treesearch has compiled a national overview of PhD courses related to forest-based materials – an important step toward stronger coordination, improved accessibility, and long-term competence development.

During 2025, Treesearch conducted a national mapping of PhD-level courses within forest-based materials and forest industry processes. The aim is to provide a clear overview of the Swedish course landscape, identify knowledge gaps, and strengthen national coordination across universities.

In total, 51 courses were identified at Swedish universities and research schools. While the course offering is broad, the results show that availability is unevenly distributed across the country and often dependent on individual initiatives and temporary projects. This creates risks for discontinuity and limits doctoral students’ ability to plan their studies.

“This mapping is an important step towards building a more long-term and coordinated course offering,”
says Josefin Illergård, author of the report and Director of Operations in Treesearch.

The results will now be used as a basis to further develop the national course portal treesearch.se, and to continue the dialogue with universities and industry on future educational needs. The work is carried out within the Education Working Group, which includes representatives from Treesearch’s university and industry partners, led by Head of Education Anastasia Riazanova.
