Research area:

My research team at Umeå University focuses on the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of nanomaterials derived from crude biomass and bio-based chemicals. Our goal is to develop new chemical conversion strategies that transform locally accessible biomass into functional nanomaterials, while reducing the environmental impact associated with materials innovation.

A major focus of our research is carbon dots, where we aim to establish a fundamental understanding of their formation mechanisms, the origin of their optical properties, and how their structures can be controlled to tailor photophysical behavior. By combining synthesis, spectroscopy, and structural analysis, we seek to establish clear structure–property relationships that enable rational materials design.

To explore emerging applications of bio-derived nanomaterials, we actively collaborate across disciplines, including photonics, electronics, biology, and medicine.
