Lignin – A hidden gem for biorefineries

O-course

LIGNIN - A hidden gem for biorefineries?

Content

This summer course, given by the departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Lund University, covers aspects of lignin research from the scientific, analytical and industrial points of view.

Topics: Lignin chemistry, Plant engineering, Depolymerization of lignin, Chemicals from lignin, Chemical analysis of lignin.

This is an outstanding opportunity to widen your perspectives on lignin in the lab and in the industry, and also to discuss with researchers in this field in a relaxed and cooperative environment.

Learning objectives

This course aims to give the participants insights into the chemistry and properties of lignin, chemical and biological processing methods for lignin, analytical methods and potential uses of lignin in a biorefinery setting. The course is based on lectures (14 hours), a case study on biochemical production, an article summary presentation, as well as self-studies of literature. Having completed the course, the participants should have gained:

  • Knowledge about lignin chemistry and industrial sources and uses of lignin
  • Knowledge about both chemical and biological methods for depolymerizing and conversion of lignin.
  • Knowledge about analytical methods for characterization of lignin.
  • A broadened understanding of current research on lignin valorization.
