Biotechnology for Pulp and Paper Industry

Course content:

This course will give an overview of the biotechnical processes in the pulp and paper industry, with a focus on

  • Bottlenecks and developing areas.
  • Overview of wood degrading organisms and enzymes.
  • Overview of industrial production of enzymes.
  • Transgenic trees.
  • Enzymatic and microbial techniques for pulp and paper industry including both
    established techniques and others still on an experimental level. This include among
    others bio-pulping, enzymatic bleaching, enzymatic activation of dissolving pulp, Pitch
    control, and enzymatic de-inking.
  • Running a biotechnology consulting company.

Learning objectives:

The student will after the course have a fundamental
understanding of the potential of biotechnology.

Handouts, reprints from journals and material from the Ljungberg textbook of pulp and paper.

Prerequisites:

No formal pre-requisites are required, but it is strongly recommended that the students have knowledge in chemistry corresponding to some years of academic studies, and an interest for biotechnology and the forest industry.

Course fee:

The course is free of charge for PhD-students listed at Swedish universities; other PhD-students are entitled to a reduced course fee. Industrial participants are welcome to take the course as commissioned education; the course fee is then SEK 18.300:- (not incl VAT). Participation on single days is also possible. In that case, a fee of SEK 8.000:- will be charged. Please contact education@treesearch.se for single days.
