PhD project: Polymerization of functional polymers and hydrogels within the fiber wall

The objective of my research project is to create double interpenetrated networks inside of the fiber wall with polymers whose chemistry can be used to tune the mechanical and chemical properties of the resulting hydrogel. The networks could be formed either by in situ polymerization within the fiber wall or by diffusion of polymers of low molecular weight with reactive groups that could be later modified to be physically or chemically attached to the fibers.
