After the PhD – What are they doing now?

You have your completed courses, you have done your experiments, written articles, defended your thesis and then – what? What are the previous PhD students from WWSC doing after their defense? In this webinar series we want to find out what WWSC Alumni are doing now and show examples of what you can work with as a PhD.
In 30 minutes webinars – perfect for a cup of coffee – you’ll get to meet some of the over 60 graduated PhDs from WWSC. There will be examples both from academia, industry, institutes, and start-ups, in Sweden and abroad.

From Academy to Industry – after receiving her PhD from Stockholm University, Christina worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at KU Leuven (Belgium) and the University of Luxembourg (Luxembourg). She then started as a project manager in a chemical R&D company in Belgium. In her current position, as an expert within the quality control unit of a biotechnological company in Germany she dives into the field of therapeutic proteins and vaccines.

Karl Håkansson

Now: Founder CelluXtreme and Senior Research Associate RISE
At the research institute RISE, Karl has the opportunity both to continue to work closely with academia, as well as work with industrial partners in small and large research projects.
Currently, Karl divides his time between RISE and the start-up CelluXtreme, of which he is one of the founders. The goal of CelluXtreme is to commercials the filament spinning of cellulose nanofibrils that originated in his PhD work within WWSC.
Kajsa Markstedt

Now: Research Coordinator, IVL Swedish Environmental Institute
Since receiving her PhD from Chalmers, Kajsa has been working with product development and quality of board packaging at Billerud. This involved solving day-to-day issues in the production process and carrying out trails within development projects spanning over several years. Kajsa recently started a new position at IVL Swedish Environmental Institute where she works with supporting researchers and the strategic development of research at IVL.
Emil Gustafsson

Now: Senior Research Project Manager, UBC Bioproducts Institute
After receiving his PhD from KTH and WWSC, Emil continued his research journey as a postdoctoral fellow. First at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada on a specialty paper project with P&G and after that at Univ. Grenoble Alpes in Grenoble, France working on bank notes. In his current role at the Bioproducts Institute at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, he has moved out of the lab and works at the interface between industrial partners and UBC research groups, coordinating projects and clusters. One example is the research program for the BC BioAlliance which involves all six pulp and paper companies in British Columbia.
Mikaela Helander

Now: R&D Specialist, Stora Enso
From lab scale to industrial scale – since her PhD defense Mikaela has been working with scaling up bio-based innovations Cellutech and Stora Enso. Recently she has been one of the key-persons in the starting a pilot-factory at the Fors mill for the foam-material Papira, an innovation that originates from WWSC.
