Hydrovoltaic effect is the generation of an electrical potential at the interface between water and a polarizable material. Natural wood has a hierarchically porous structure with vertically aligned cellulose nanofibrils in the cell walls. It contains many negatively charged groups and offers advantages like abundance, low cost, biodegradability, durability, and high mechanical strength, making it an ideal candidate for hydrovoltaic devices. My research is to efficiently use wood materials to harvest hydrovoltaic energy and understand its mechanism.
